  • Born in Skutec, youth spent in Kolin
  • Interested in photography from a young age; studied law, medicine, aesthetics
  • With Josef Sudek and Adolf Schneeberger, founded the Czech Photographic Society in 1924
  • Taught at Bratislava School of Arts and Crafts, 1931-1935
  • Taught at State School of Graphic Arts in Prague, 1935-1944
