Born in Vienna
Family moved to Czech lands in 1900
1909-1913 graduate of teacher training institute in Hradec Kralove
1923-1937 collected folk songs and documented folk culture
1924-1928 studied ethnography and musicology at the University of Bratislava
He was one of the founders in 1946, and the first dean of the Film Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU)
Named National Artist in 1968
