  • 1933-1936 attends secondary school near Prague, and then in Prague
  • apprenticeship with photographer Karel Hajek begins in 1936
  • attends the State School of Graphic Arts in 1939 for one year
  • collaboration and friendship with Vaclav Chochola and Karel Ludwig
  • forced into hard labor in Breslau, Germany, from 1942 to 1944, which he documented with approximately 100 photographs of the labor camp
  • joins Czechoslovak Fine Arts Union in 1949
  • imprisoned from 1958 to 1965
