- Born in Komorany, near Prague
- Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Prague, 1883-1884
- Studied at the Munich Academy in1884, joining his friends Alphonse Mucha and Ludek Marold
- Became one of the founding members of art society Skreta in 1885
- Studied at the Academy Julian in Paris with Mucha as well, 1887-1888
- Studied architecture at the Prague Technical University for one year
- From 1898 he was a professor and head of the Department of Drawing and Painting at the Academy of Applied Arts, Prague
