- Born in Prague
- 1933-1936 attends secondary school near Prague, and then in Prague
- apprenticeship with photographer Karel Hajek begins in 1936
- attends the State School of Graphic Arts in 1939 for one year
- collaboration and friendship with Vaclav Chochola and Karel Ludwig
- forced into hard labor in Breslau, Germany, from 1942 to 1944, which he documented with approximately 100 photographs of the labor camp
- joins Czechoslovak Fine Arts Union in 1949
- imprisoned from 1958 to 1965
